West Fork of Second Creek Stream Improvements
The West Fork of Second Creek, a left bank tributary of Second Creek, is an ephemeral steam within a historically undeveloped area. As development began within the headwaters, modeling to evaluate the development impacts within the reach and determination of attenuation measures occurred. An implementation plan to meet the engineering requirements while generating a water course with a natural feel through sculpted grout drop structures, a widened riparian corridor, planted soil riprap stabilization, and off-line water quality facilities was paramount. Engaging the public to the enhanced reach occurred through a meandering regional trail, low water crossings to allow access to both sides of the reach, and grade separated crossings to provide a safe travel way on the Aurora pedestrian network. The project controlled the tributaries developed 100-year runoff while creating a natural experience and habitat, while providing pedestrian opportunities to focus on these experiences.
