MDA-B Superfund Site
Federal Superfund site MDA-B, a historical landfill that accepted nuclear contamination generated by the National Laboratory located in Los Alamos, New Mexico during the development of the first atomic bombs, did not hold the proper environmental compliance requirements, nor was there proper documentation of the amount or type of nuclear waste contained within the facility. J3 Engineering Consultants was hired to provide stormwater management and grading and phasing operations plans to provide the safe excavation and identification of waste, deposition within containment facilities, and staging of the containment facilities for transport, off-site to a secure nuclear waste facility. Encountered site conditions, required fluid adjustments to best management practices and grading and phasing operations. Implementation of grading operations occurred within negatively pressured enclosures by remote excavation devices to protect the adjacent public and construction staff. The successful completion of the landfill remediation occurred with the definitive identification of deposed material culminating in the safe relocation off-site.
